AROUND THE YARRA VALLEY
The Yarra Valley is one of Australia's important cool climate wine producing regions. There has been wine, beer and cider production dating back to early 1800s.
There are over 90 cellar doors, plus many more vineyards. There are older wineries such as Domaine Chandon, de Bortoli and Yering Station and there are many other mid-size and boutique cellar doors that provide access to a varied wine choice.
The recent appearance of several micro-breweries and cider makers, takes in White Rabbit Brewery, Coldstream Brewery, Kellybrook, Hargreaves Hill, Punt Road Wines and a couple of gin distilleries.
There are at least three artisan cheese makers in the Yarra Valley, the oldest being Yarra Valley Dairy, some of whose cheeses are now featured in a limited range in some supermarkets, but the full choice is available on site. To go with the cheese, there are also some artisan sour dough breadmakers whose loaves are sold in specialist locations in the Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges. There is caviar from a salmon and trout farm, fresh truffles in winter, several bee keepers with honey and in summer; lots of fruit growers where you can pick cherries and berries yourself if you wish. More enticing details of things to do can be found from time to time in our Yarra Valley Blog.
And, of course, there is the Chocolaterie and many restaurants, cafes and patisseries, to suit all tastes and price range both in the villages of the Yarra Valley and at many wineries. You can climb aboard Puffing Billy, Australia’s much-loved historic steam train.
As well as art galleries, glass blowing, alpaca yarn, jewellery, soap and candlemakers, fabrics, artist's works, crafts quaint shops and there are also places to hunt for antiques and curios, and books. There are forest walks in a realm of fern glades and waterfalls. There is the opportunity to get up close to Australian wildlife at the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary, ballooning, music festivals, mountain bike hire, different weekend courses, other actvities around the Yarra Valley and weekend markets in every village. Our holiday cottage accommodation is very well placed to access all of the Yarra Valley.
